Actavis Promethazine Cough Syrup is a prescription medication that combines promethazine (an antihistamine) with codeine (an opioid cough suppressant). The syrup contains two key active ingredients: promethazine, a first-generation antihistamine that relieves allergy symptoms and has mild sedative properties, and codeine, an opioid that acts on the brain’s cough center to reduce coughing and has mild pain-relieving and sedative effects.
Medical uses of Actavis Promethazine Cough Syrup include treating severe cough due to cold, flu, or respiratory infections, allergic reactions, and chronic cough and sinusitis. Dosage depends on age, weight, and medical condition, but a general guideline is 5 mL (one teaspoon) every 4-6 hours as needed for adults and lower doses for children (6-12 years) as prescribed by a doctor.
It comes with potential side effects, including drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, blurred vision, and dry mouth. Severe risks include respiratory depression, addiction, and overdose, especially if taken in excessive amounts or mixed with alcohol or other sedatives.
